Aims
After completing this course successfully, the student can:
  • translate simple system-related performance problems into adequate performance models that can be solved by analytical means or simulation.
  • solve discrete- and continuous-time Markov-chain models;
  • analytically solve basic performance models of M/M/1 and M/G/1 type with various scheduling disciplines, including FCFS, Processor Sharing (PS) and priority scheduling;
  • analytically solve basic open queueing networks (feed-forward and Jackson queuing networks);
  • set up a simple event-based discrete-event simulation; analyse/interpret and properly present the outcome of these simulations;
  • explain the role and impact of model-based performance evaluation in comparison to measurements and simulations to investigate performance problems.
Content
Well-performing communication networks are of critical importance to our society. Performance evaluation techniques are needed to analyse and optimize the performance of communication networks, both in the design phase and during operations. This course addresses the basics of performance evaluation of (fixed and wireless) communication networks, by making models of them and analyzing these using mathematical and simulation techniques.
Assumed previous knowledge
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have a Bachelor's degree and need to have:
•        working knowledge in probability theory and statistics, as typically taught in introductory courses on probability theory, so that they can compute expected values, variances, et cetera.
•        a basic understanding of layered communication protocols/systems, as taught in the module Network Systems.
